Fixes for Faster Broadband

Need some quick fixes for faster broadband internet connections? Slow broadband can be incredibly frustrating however you might not need to rush out and buy a new broadband package as these five fixes will help you get the most from your existing broadband package.

1. Get the most out of your router

It is well worth having a read of the manual that comes with your router. Admittedly it may not be the most riveting read but there will be settings you can tweak to get the most out of your router.

There’s more to getting the most out of a wireless router than just having the right one configured the right way. Where you place your wireless router is important too. The more objects between your router and your computer the weaker the signal will be when it reaches the computer. Objects like doors, walls and furniture can all reduce the signal strength that reaches your computer.

Ideally you should place your wireless router as close as possible to the computer and it should be high up, so there it is less likely that there will be objects in the way of the signal. Placing your router away from other electrical items, which could interfere with the signal, is a good idea too.

2. Don’t overload your bandwidth

Many people have programs running in the background that they don’t really need which eat up valuable bandwidth. There are many applications will start automatically when you start your computer and will take up bandwidth, sometimes unnecessarily.

Applications including messenger services, Skype and Media players could all be running concurrently and draining bandwidth. For applications you don’t use regularly you  can usually change the settings so they do not automatically start when you switch your computer on. If you are unsure which applications are running you can check this by opening task manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL).

3. Don’t share bandwidth with others!

If you have a wireless broadband connection then you will get better speeds if you do not share it amongst multiple computers.

If you do have a wireless connection it is important, not just for speed reasons,  to secure it (so a pass phrase is needed to access it), as this will not only stop unscrupulous neighbours stealing you internet connection, but having an unsecured connection may allow others to access personal information such as financial details and is a security risk.

4. Talk to your broadband provider

If your connection is still running slow it’s worth talking to your internet provider as they may be able to diagnose the problem. Furthermore if you are on an old broadband package which is no longer available, they may upgrade you to it’s more modern, faster replacement. For example the entry level package with many providers now offer up to 8Mbs speeds whereas you may have signed up to a 1Mbs or 2Mbs a number of years ago.

5. What about faster mobile broadband?

You can boost the speed of your mobile broadband connection with a few free or cheap tricks. One relatively cheap way to increase speeds is to improve the signal buy purchasing an antenna extension to clip on to your mobile broadband dongle which will boost the signal it receives.

Alternatively a USB lead will allow you to place your mobile broadband dongle nearer a window rather than just plugged directly into the USB port on your laptop (as signals are generally stronger outside).

Finally it’s always worth checking mobile broadband coverage in your area before signing up to a provider. You should be able to check coverage on the websites of any of the providers you are considering.

Tips to Make Your PC Run Smoother and Faster

Want to make your PC run faster and smoother?  These are some small tips which make great impact on the performance of your computer. Everybody wants a PC which runs the way we want. A newly bought computer just impresses you, with its fast interface, quick reactions, negligible garbage, in short just like what a new computer should.

But after using your computer for about a year or so, like me, you would also face some minor problems with your computer performance e.g. takes more time to boot up, hangs up very frequently, you see a large cluster of useless icons on your desktop, applications run slower, some even refuse to run. Innumerable problems are faced by all of us.

Now all of us won’t buy a new computer just for this reason, so what would you do? Format your hard disk? Probably, but who wants to lose precious data? There are many small things that PC users, don’t know about, or though being aware of them don’t prefer to use them as they require investment of time. And who has free time? Well then, what to do?

I am going to tell you, what I do to my own PC, to achieve the performance level I want from it. This doesn’t require much effort to follow these simple tips, nor do they require much time, but surely they increase our PC performance, your PC would surely run smoother and faster.

Make Computer Faster

1. First of all, don’t ever fill your desktop with shortcut icons or data folders or files. Keep your desktop as clean as possible. If possible, don’t place shortcut of applications on your desktop, just run them from the start menu. This would vastly speed up your startup process.
2. Keep your C: drive; or whichever partition your OS is installed to, as clean and defragmented as possible. I personally prefer not to install most of the programs on my C: drive. Because this is the drive where your important OS files are present, and whatever space is left on the drive is used as virtual memory, so less the garbage on your OS drive, faster your computer would run.
3. Use least visual enhancements on your desktop. That means, to reduce the use of desktop gadgets, which takes loads of memory usage. Also using a simple theme is best. Animated desktop themes, screensavers or wallpapers obviously take more memory usage from your hands. So keeping it simple makes the difference.
4. If you are regular internet user, then consider using the “Clear Cache” function of your browser, to clear temporary offline data saved by the browser – this clears up some considerate amount of temporary data. Also regularly clear browser history and cookies.
5. Update your antivirus regularly, preferably every two or three days. Worms and malwares are a very common reason due to which your computer runs slower than usual, that is because worms duplicate themselves and fill your disk with useless, corrupt data and also occupies a large amount of your available memory.
6. Make it a habit to clear %temp% and %tmp% folders of your PC every day. They contain temporary files which you can freely delete to gain some small but considerable amount of disk space.
7. Use Disk Defragmenter and Disk Cleanup on a regular basis.
8. One piece of advice from me is not to use any disk cleaning utilities available on the net unless they are from trusted owners. Because, it is true that they help you gain some more disk space and gain some speed from your PC but most of their work can be done manually by users, so they just take some useless space on your disk.
9. After installing any program, they take up some space on your disk, also on your registry. I suggest not installing any program which you consider ‘use and throw’ because even after uninstalling them, some of their remains still linger on your PC, which also affects your PC performance.
10. Regularly delete all the contents of your ‘Recent’ folder. This folder contains shortcut to your recently used documents and programs. These shortcuts are just useless garbage which you should clear on daily basis.
11. To speed up the boot time, disable any useless startup programs fromMSConfig utility.
12. Delete contents of your recycle bin to gain some more disk space.
13. TeraCopy is one of the best programs to speed up file copying. I personally prefer using this program.
14. Using external DNS servers such as OpenDNS, boosts your internet speed up to some extent.
15. Select “Adjust for best performance” setting on the Performance tab in System Properties.

These are some small tips which I prefer following and I know the results. If you are completely fed up with your PC performance, then you should try reformatting your hard disk partition. That would surely do it. But if you just want to continue with your PC for a long time, then from the very beginning, follow these steps regularly and you’ll see the impact of these minor steps in a major way.

CPU-Z For Windows 8

Software developers have begun updating their software to add support for Windows 8. The developers of CPU-Z utility recently released CPU-Z version 1.59 with support for latest Windows 8 operating system. With this release, CPU-Z software now officially supports the latest iteration of Windows OS.

For those who are not familiar with CPU-Z, it’s a free utility which gathers your PC’s hardware information and displays in an easy-to-understand interface. With CPU-Z, you can get detailed information on processor, motherboard, memory, SPD, caches, and graphic cards.

The simple user interface displays information in separate tabs. Under CPU tab you can find information about CPU name and model, code name, package, technology, core voltage, core speed, bus speed, number of cores, and threads.

The Mainboard tab shows motherboard manufacturer name, model number, chipset manufacturer and chipset name, BIOS brand, BIOS date, graphic interface version and max supported and some other useful information related to the motherboard.

Under Memory tab you can find information about memory type, size, number of channels, DRAM frequency, and latency information.

Information on graphics card(s) can be found under Graphics tab. Here you can find GPU name, code name, technology, revision, clock speed, and memory size information. To know more about installed memory switch to SPD tab. Here, select a memory slot (if you have installed more than one memory stick) to view detailed information such as memory type, module size, max bandwidth, manufacturer, part number, etc.

Another good thing about this freeware is that it doesn’t require any installation. Simply download the zip file, extract it to desktop and then run CPU ID CPU-Z.exe file. An installer is also available for those users who would like to install CPU-Z on their PCs. Apart from all the above mentioned hardware information, it also displays some software information including Windows version, build number, and DirectX version.

Options are available to save report in TXT and HTML formats. To save the generated hardware and software report, switch to About tab and click Save Report button.

CPU-Z supports both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 operating systems.

I am not the kind of user who downloads and stores music on the computer. In fact, I rarely download music from the Internet. More often than not I tune into online radio stations or visit my favourite YouTube to watch videos and movies.

I know that a plethora of software available to download music from the web. But most of these software are either expensive or don’t offer options to download music from multiple services.

Recently, I came across a good software to download music while searching for applications to watch TV from desktop. Toys for Rabbits

Many owners are surprised to find out how playful their rabbits are. Most rabbits will appreciate a selection of fun toys, which can be as simple as a cardboard box or empty paper towel roll.
Toys will help keep your rabbit physically active and prevent boredom. A bored rabbit is much more likely to become destructive or even depressed and overweight. Deprived of toys and play things, your rabbit may turn to your furniture and other belongings as chew toys, or even dangerous things like electrical cords. Experiment with a variety of toys to find out what is entertaining to your rabbit, and continue to provide new toys (or at least rotate the ones he/she has).

While a good selection of toys will help keep your rabbit away from things you do not want him or her chewing on, the toys you provide must be safe too. If your rabbit is interested in eating one type (e.g. plastic, cardboard, etc.) of toy, switch to another type. Watch for soft rubber items or plastic parts that can be eaten and cause gastrointestinal problems or blockages. While your rabbit will likely enjoy shredding paper and cardboard, make sure he/she is not ingesting much of it.

A huge variety of items can make good rabbit toys. You might not find them marketed as rabbit toys, and some are things you will have around the house. Be creative and pay attention to how your rabbit seems to like to play, and you may come up with ideas of your own (just pay close attention to safety). Some ideas:

Google Ends Search Traffic to Parked Domain Names

A new Google algorithm update heralds the end of Google traffic toparked domain names. Many domainers and webmasters usually park hundreds of keyword rich domain names and monetize them through advertising programs like GoDaddy Cash Parking and Google Adsense for Domains.

Google Search has revealed that this new update brings in a new classifier which will affect parked domain traffic.

New “parked domain” classifier: This is a new algorithm for automatically detecting parked domains. Parked domains are placeholder sites that are seldom useful and often filled with ads. They typically don’t have valuable content for our users, so in most cases we prefer not to show them.

A parked domain name displays a temporary web page when people type your domain name in a web browser. People usually park domain names till they decide to create a website, find a hosting provider, or simply to hold and sell domain names later. Till then most decide to make money online with the page, which might draw some Google traffic at least.

If you look around at parked domain names, typically they are keyword rich for targeting specific traffic and have no useful content. Moreover, while the domain is parked, domain owners decide to install advertising programs, which also brings in advertising revenue on the side. Since the parked domain page is full of ads only, there is a high chance the visitor who reaches such a page will click through and make money for the domain owner.

Many domain name registrars offer domain parking monetization services. GoDaddy Cash Parking is a service from Godaddy domain registrar, which displays ads on parked domains and domain owners can earn 60-80% of the ad revenue. They charge $4-$5 per month for the basic plan service.Google Adsense for Domains is another free popular program by Google, where domain owners can display Adsense ads on their parked domain names to earn free money.
